  • The state of Uttar Pradesh produced the highest amount of milk in India at about 30.5 million metric tons, followed by Rajasthan in the financial year 2019. The total milk production in the country amounted to about 187 million metric tons that fiscal year.
  • India, with the second-largest population, is one of the leading producers of milk in the world. 
  • The country produces nearly 50 to 60 million tonnes of milk every year and currently contributes around 9.5 percent of the global milk production. India is also the largest consumer of milk in the world. 

  • Uttar Pradesh has the highest buffalo population in the country and the second-highest cattle population. The majority of the rural population in the state is engaged in livestock and dairying.
  • In 2016-2017 Uttar Pradesh produced 27,770 thousand tonnes of milk while in the year 2018-19, the state produced 30,519 thousand tonnes of milk
  • Rajasthan is the second-largest producer of milk in the country. In 2015-2016 the cattle milk production in Rajasthan was 18,500 thousand tonnes which increased to 20,850 thousand tonnes in 2016-2017 and in the year 2018-2019, it produced 23,668 thousand tonnes of milk. Around 75% of the population of Rajasthan lives in rural areas. 
  • The third state in terms of milk production is Madhya Pradesh which stands at 15,911 tonnes as per the survey of 2018-2019.
