  • Handmade Carpet is an example of the traditional cottage industry in Rajasthan.
  • Cottage industries are small manufacturing units where artisans use local raw materials and simple tools to produce everyday goods usually in their homes with the help of their family members or part-time labour.
  • The handloom industry is very important in the state. Woolen shawls, Kota’s laces, sarees, khes (bedsheets), carpets, niwar are manufactured in several districts of Rajasthan.
  • Besides this, artificial silk is also made in Kota, Udaipur, Banswara, etc.
  • The state government is also trying to promote the industry of artificial silk.

  • On the basis of raw materials used, cottage industries are classified as:
    • Agriculture based cottage industries:
      • Handicraft, jaggery, raw – sugar, dye-making, printing, carpet-making, oil–mill, etc.
    • Minerals–based cottage industries:
      • Marble, gold, silver – ornaments making (goldsmith), making of knives and scissors.
    • Livestock–based cottage industries:
      • Shoemaking, leather bag-making, bone–grinding, woolen cloth making, making ivory goods, etc.
    • Forest – products-based cottage industries:
      • wax, gum, paper, bamboo baskets, making wooden toys, etc.
