Given:

Total amount to be distributed = 576

Men + women = 140

Calculations:

Let x be the number of men and y be the number of women.

Given total number of men and women = 140

⇒ x + y = 140       -----(i)

A man gets Rs. 4.80 and a woman gets Rs. 3.20

The amount given to 140 men and women = Rs. 576

⇒ 4.80x + 3.20y = 576      -----(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii)

⇒ 4.80x + 4.80y = 672 ----- Multiply (i) by 4.80

⇒ 4.80x + 3.20y = 576       -----(ii)

Subtract equation (1) from equation (2)

⇒ 1.60y = 96

⇒ y = 96/1.6

⇒ y = 60

∴ Number of women is 60.
