  • The Western Ghats form one of the four watersheds of India, feeding the perennial rivers of India.
    • The major river systems originating in the Western Ghats are Godavari, Kaveri, Krishna, Thamiraparani and Tungabhadra.
    • Mahanadi does not originate from the Western Ghats.

  •  The river Godavari rises at an elevation of 1,067 m in the Western Ghats near Thriambak Hills in the Nasik district of Maharashtra.
    • After flowing for about 1,465 km., in a generally south-east direction, it falls into the Bay of Bengal.
  • The Cauvery is the largest river in the state and originates from Talakaveri in the Madikeri district.
