  • The Central Government had proposed to celebrate the birthday of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee as 'Seva Divas' in 2015.


  • Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was a great leader, barrister, and academician.
  • He was born on 6th June 1901 in Kolkata.
  • His father's name was Ashutosh Mukherjee, who was an educationist and intellectual in Bengal.
  • His mother's name was Jogmaya Devi Mukherjee.
  • He became a member of the Senate in 1926 after graduating from the University of Calcutta.
  • In the year 1927, he passed the examination of the barrister.
  • He became Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of 33 years.


  • Political Career:
    • The debate on abolishing or abetting Article 370 in Kashmir was first started by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
    • He opposed two Prime Ministers in Kashmir at that time.
    • In the early days, he had his affiliations with Congress Party.
    • But due to his conflict with Jawaharlal Nehru, he formed his own party.
    • He founded the Rashtriya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951, in consultation with Guru Golwalkar (Head of the RSS).
    • It later merged with the Janata Party and then the Bharatiya Janata Party was formed in 1980 after the party split.
  • He wanted that no one had to take permission to go to Kashmir.
    • On 8th May 1953, he left Delhi for Kashmir without permission.
    • Two days later, on 10 May in Jalandhar, he said that "We should go without permission in Jammu and Kashmir, this should be our fundamental right".
    • On 11 May, he was arrested on his way to Srinagar.
    • He was kept in jail there and then released a few days later.
    • His health deteriorated on 22 June and he died under mysterious circumstances on 23 June 1953.
