  • Polio Eradication Program
    • The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership led by national governments with six-core partners.
    • The Six Core Partners are World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
    • Its goal is to eradicate polio worldwide.
    • The first polio vaccine was developed in 1950 by Jonas Salk.
    • With the global initiative of eradication of polio in 1988 by WHO, the Pulse Polio Immunization program was launched in India in  1995.
    • On 27 March 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared India a polio-free country since no cases of wild polio were reported for five years.

  • Polio Myelitis( Polio)
    • It is a viral disease caused by Poliovirus.
    • It is transmitted through intestinal discharge, contaminated food, drink, etc.
    • Symptoms: 
      • Effect on Central Nervous System, cell of the backbone and intestine become completely damaged.
      • Paralytic type of indication follows and reaches a maximum within 2-3 days.
    • Prevention:
      • Vaccination- Inoculation of Salk Vaccine.
      • Oral Eradication- It was invented by Albert Sabine for polio eradication.
