Correct Answer - Option 4 : CO2

The Correct Answer is CO2.

  • The greenhouse effect is mainly due to CO2.
  • The most important greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2). Volcanic outgassing, organic matter combustion and natural degradation, and aerobic (oxygen-using) organisms respiration are all-natural sources of atmospheric CO2.
  • Carbon dioxide is a colourless gas with a density that is around 53% of that of dry air.
  • A carbon atom is covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms in a carbon dioxide molecule. It is found as a trace gas in the Earth's atmosphere.
  • In the Earth's atmosphere, carbon dioxide is the most important long-lived greenhouse gas. Anthropogenic emissions mainly from the use of fossil fuels and deforestation have steadily increased their accumulation in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution, resulting in global warming.
  • Since carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, it also contributes to ocean acidification.

  • The second most powerful greenhouse gas is methane (CH4). Because the radiative forcing generated per molecule is greater, CH4 is more potent than CO2. Furthermore, in the range of wavelengths absorbed by CH4, the infrared window is less saturated, allowing more molecules to fill in the field.
  • The chemical compound SO2stands for sulphur dioxide. It's a poisonous gas that gives off the odour of burned matches.
  • CFCs and HCFCs are halogenated paraffin hydrocarbons that contain only carbon (C), hydrogen (H), chlorine (Cl), and fluorine (F), and are formed as a volatile derivative of methane, ethane, and propane.
