  • For his role in introducing and further cultivating high-yielding wheat varieties in India, Swaminathan has been dubbed the "Father of the Green Revolution in India." 

  • Swaminathan is a proponent of moving India towards sustainable development, especially through environmentally sustainable agriculture, food security, and biodiversity protection, which he refers to as an "evergreen revolution."
  • He was the director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research from 1972 to 1979. From 1979 to 1980, he served as the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • From 1982 to 1988, he was Director-General of the International Rice Research Institute, and in 1988, he was elected President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
