Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan is an Indian geneticist and administrator who is best known for his role in the Green Revolution, a programme that saw high-yield wheat and rice varieties planted across the country.
For his role in introducing and further cultivating high-yielding wheat varieties in India, Swaminathan has been dubbed the "Father of the Green Revolution in India."

Swaminathan is a proponent of moving India towards sustainable development, especially through environmentally sustainable agriculture, food security, and biodiversity protection, which he refers to as an "evergreen revolution."
He was the director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research from 1972 to 1979. From 1979 to 1980, he served as the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
From 1982 to 1988, he was Director-General of the International Rice Research Institute, and in 1988, he was elected President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
