Correct Answer - Option 3 : 38.44%

Given:

Successive discounts of 10%, 14.5% and 20% are given on the jeans.

Concepts used:

M.P. = S.P. + Discount

Discount % = Discount/M.P. × 100

Calculation:

Let M.P. be Rs. x.

⇒ First discount = x × 10% = x/10

⇒ Successive discount = (x – x/10) × 14.5% = 261x/2,000

⇒ Second successive discount = (9x/10 – 261x/2,000) × 20% = 1,539x/10,000

⇒ Equivalent single discount = (x/10) + (261x/2,000) + (1,539x/10,000) = 3,844x/10,000

⇒ Single discount % = 3,844x/10,000/x × 100 = 38.44%

Equivalent single discount is equal to 38.44%.
