Correct Answer - Option 3 : 7.75%

Given:

Marked price of a toy is Rs. 40,000.

The retailer gave discount of 10% on first 62.5% of marked price.

For the remaining amount, discount of 4% was provided.

Concepts used:

M.P. = S.P. + Discount

Discount % = Discount/M.P. × 100

Calculation:

M.P. of toy = Rs. 40,000

First 62.5% of M.P. = 62.5% × 40,000 = Rs. 25,000

Discount % = 10

⇒ ((25,000 – S.P.)/25,000) × 100 = 10

⇒ S.P. = Rs. 22,500

Discount % on remaining amount = 4

⇒ (15,000 – S.P.)/15,000 × 100 = 4

⇒ Remaining S.P. = Rs. 14,400

⇒ Total S.P. = Rs. 22,500 + 14,400 = Rs. 36,900

⇒ Discount = Rs. 40,000 – Rs. 36,900 = Rs. 3100

⇒ Overall discount % = (Rs. 3100/Rs. 40,000) × 100 = 7.75%

Overall discount on toy is equal to 7.75%.
