Correct Answer - Option 2 : Greater than rolling friction

The correct answer is Greater than rolling friction.

  • Sliding friction is always greater than rolling friction.
  • This is because the force of friction depends on the area of contact between the two surfaces. As the area of contact is less in the case of rolling than in the case of sliding, therefore sliding friction is greater than rolling friction.

  • Sliding Friction
    • It is the force required to keep the object sliding on a surface at the same speed.
    • It is the resistance created by two subjects sliding against each other.
  • Rolling friction
    • When one object rolls over the surface of another object, the resistance to its motion is called rolling friction.
    • Rolling reduces the effect of friction.
    • Ball-bearing work on the principle of rolling friction.
    • Ball bearings are used in cycles, scooters to reduce friction between wheel and axle.

  • Friction:
    • The opposing force that comes into play when two bodies come in contact with each other is called Friction.
  • The nano-scale irregularities present on the surfaces of contact are considered as the origin of Friction.
  • Lubrication and Smoothening of surfaces are done to reduce friction.
