  • Major Somnath Sharma who was honoured with Paramveer Chakra posthumously in 1947 belonged to Kumaon Regiment.
  • Sharma was born on 31 January 1923, to a Dogra Brahmin family at Dadh, Kangra, Punjab (present-day Himachal Pradesh).
  • Sharma was commissioned into the 8th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment, of the British Indian Army.
  • During World War II, he saw action against the Japanese in Burma during the Arakan Campaign.
  • At that time he served under the command of Colonel K. S. Thimmayya, who would later rise to the rank of general and become Chief of the Army Staff from 1957 to 1961.
  • On 21 June 1950, Sharma's award of the Param Vir Chakra, for his actions on 3 November 1947 in defending the Srinagar airport, was gazetted.

Gorkha Rifles is a Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army that was re-raised after independence.

The regiment consists of primarily the Kirati Tribes Rai and Limbu of Nepal and north-eastern India.

It also recruits from Indian Gorkhas and Bhutias from Darjeeling district, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

Garhwal Rifle

The Garhwal Rifles is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army.

It was originally raised in 1887 as the 39th (Garhwal) Regiment of the Bengal Army.

It then became part of the British Indian Army, and after the Independence of India, it was incorporated into the Indian Army.
