  • The Constitution of India declares India as A Union of States.
  • India, a union of states, is a Sovereign, Secular, Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of Government.
  • Article 1 in the Constitution states that India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.
  • The territory of India shall consist of: The territories of the states, The Union territories, and Any territory that may be acquired.
  • India is a federal union comprising 28 states and 8 union territories, for a total of 36 entities. The states and union territories are further subdivided into districts and smaller administrative divisions.

  • Union Territories are administered by the President through an Administrator appointed by him/her.
  • From the largest to the smallest, each State/UT of India has a unique demography, history, and culture, dress, festivals, language, etc.
  • While submitting a draft constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar stated that although the constitution is federal in structure the committee had used the term Union because of certain advantages which were explained in assembly indicate two things:
