When an air is compressed from 200 litres to 100 litres at a constant pressure of 3 bar then the work done on the air will be:
1. 2 × 104 J
2. 1 × 104 J
3. 3 × 104 J

Correct Answer - Option 3 : 3 × 104 J

CONCEPT:

Isobaric process:

  • When a thermodynamic process undergoes a physical change in such a way that its pressure remains constant, then the change is known as the isobaric process.

⇒ P = constant

CALCULATION:

Given P = 3 bar = 3×105 N/m2, V1 = 200 litres = 0.2 m3 and V2 = 100 litres = 0.1 m3

  • When the pressure is constant during the process, then the work done is given as,

⇒ W = P(V2 - V1)

⇒ W = 3 × 10× (0.1 - 0.2)

⇒ W = -3 × 10× 0.1

⇒ W = -3 × 104 J

  • Hence, option 3 is correct.
