Correct Answer - Option 4 : The Ganges originates from Gangotri.

The Correct Answer is The Ganges originates from Gangotri

  • The Ganges is an Asian trans-border river that runs across India and Bangladesh.
  • The 2,525-kilometer river rises in the western Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, and flows south and east across North India's Gangetic Plain to Bangladesh, where it empties into the Bay of Bengal.
  • By drainage, it is the world's third-largest river. The upper phase of the Ganges starts at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in Devprayag, Uttarakhand's Garhwal division.
  • At Gomukh, the Bhagirathi rises at the foot of the Gangotri Glacier.
  • Note:
    • From Gangotri, the Bhagirathi river is originated.
    • When the Bhagirathi river join Alaknanda in Devprayag then they together called Ganga.

  • After the Ganga, the Godavari is India's second-longest river. Its source is in Maharashtra's Triambakeshwar. The Godavari is the largest river in peninsular India in terms of length, catchment area, and discharge, and has been dubbed the Dakshina Ganga (the Ganges of the South).
  • The Kosi River is known as "Bihar's Sorrow" because its annual floods affect approximately 21,000 km2 of fertile agricultural lands, disrupting the rural economy.
  • An antecedent stream is one that retains its original course and pattern through changes in the topography of the underlying rock. These rivers existed long before the Himalayas were uplifted. The rivers Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Kosi, and Subansiri all began on the Tibetan side and now cut deep gorges across the current mountain ranges.
