  • Central Ganga Authority was constituted in June 1985.
  • The “Ganga Action Plan” (GAP) for immediate reduction of pollution load on the river Ganga was prepared by the Department of Environment in December 1984.
  • To oversee the 'Ganga Action Plan' the GoI constituted the Central Ganga Authority under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985.

  •  National Ganga River Basin Authority
    • The Central Government has set up the ‘National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA)’ vide gazette notification dated 20.2.2009.
    • It is a collaborative institution of Central and State Governments under the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986 for abatement of pollution of River Ganga.
  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Modi, also decided to turn National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)  the implementation wing of the NGRBA  into an authority from society, giving it teeth to take action under Environment Protection Act, 1986 against those polluting the holy river.
  • ‘Namami Gange Programme’, is an Integrated Conservation Mission, approved as ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014 with a budget outlay of Rs.20,000 Crore to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation, and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
