  • The office of appellate or supreme court justice is nonpartisan.
  • To be eligible to serve in either position, a person must have practiced law for at least 10 years.
  • An individual may be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court if
    • He/She has been a Judge of a High Court for at least five years ("Appointment from the Bench")
    • He/She has been an advocate of a High Court for at least ten years ("Appointment from the Bar")

  • The Supreme Court of India was inaugurated on January 28, 1950.
  • It succeeded in the Federal Court of India and was established under the Government of India Act, 1935.
