Correct Answer - Option 2 : Stainless steel

The correct answer is Stainless steel.

  • Alloy steel containing chromium to resist rusting is known as stainless steel.
    • Steel is an alloy of Iron and Carbon
  • Stainless steel is known for its corrosion resistance.
  • The corrosion resistance is a result of a very thin oxide layer on the steel’s surface
    • This oxide layer is passive since it renders the surface electrochemically passive.
    • The passive layer forms because of the chromium added to stainless steel.
  • Stainless steel must have at least 10.5% chromium for the passive layer to form. The more the chromium better its resistance is.
    • The chromium rusts first. The rusted chromium forms this passive layer.
  • The nickel in stainless steel helps hold this protective layer of chromium rust in place.

  • Alloy is a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion.
  • Wrought iron contains less than 0.1 percent carbon and 1 or 2 percent slag. It is superior to cast iron.
  • Cast iron is an alloy of iron that contains 2 to 4 percent carbon, varying amounts of silicon and manganese and traces of impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus.
  • Hard steel is steel hardened by the addition of other elements like carbon (usually), manganese, phosphorus.
