Correct Answer - Option 2 : Pampas

The correct answer is Pampas.

  • Pampas is the mid-latitude grassland in South America.
  • Pampas:
    • The Pampas are fertile South American lowlands that cover more than 1,200,000 square kilometres (460,000 sq mi) and include the Argentine provinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Córdoba; all of Uruguay; and Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul.
    • The vast plains are a natural region, interrupted only by the low Ventana and Tandil hills, near Bahía Blanca and Tandil (Argentina), with a height of 1,300 m (4,265 ft) and 500 m (1,640 ft), respectively.
    • The climate is temperate, with precipitation of 600 to 1,200 mm (23.6 to 47.2 in) that is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year, making the soils appropriate for agriculture.
    • The area is also one of the distinct physiography provinces of the larger Paraná–Paraguay Plain division.

  • Prairie:
    • Prairies are the temperate grasslands of North America.
    • The word ‘Prairie’ originated from the Latin word ‘priata’ which means meadow.
    • They have the following features:
    • It is a region of flat, gently sloping or hilly land.
    • For the most part, prairies are treeless but, near the low lying plains, flanking river valleys, woodlands can be found.
    • Tall trees, up to two meters high, dominate the landscape.
  • Veld:
    • Veld, the name was given to various types of open country in Southern Africa that is used for pasturage and farmland.
    • To most South African farmers today the “veld” refers to the land they work, much of which has long since ceased to be “natural.”
    • Various types of veld may be discerned, depending upon local characteristics such as elevation, cultivation, and climate.
    • Thus, there is a high veld, a middle veld, a low veld, bushveld, a thornveld, and a grass veld.
    • The boundary between these different varieties of the veld is frequently vague, and all of them are usually referred to with the general term veld by the local inhabitants.
    • For convenience, its major regions—Highveld, Middleveld, and Lowveld—are distinguished on the basis of elevation.
  • Steppes:
    • Steppes are found in continental interiors.
    • They are usually found in the temperate latitudes and hence come under the influence of Westerly winds.
    • Steppes are characterized by vast grasslands which are, by and large, devoid of trees.
    • Steppes typically refer to the vast temperate grasslands of Eurasia, which stretch between the Black Sea coast on the east to the Altai Mountains in the west, covering a length of over 2000 miles.
