Concept: -

As per IS 800 : 2007, cl. 3.7.

Plate elements of a cross-section may buckle locally due to compressive stresses. The local buckling can be avoided by before limit state is achieved by limiting the width to thickness ration of teach element of a cross-section subjected to axial force, moment, or shear.
