Correct Answer - Option 2 : Effective length does not exceed 3 times its least lateral dimension

Concept:-

As per IS 456:2000, cl. 26.5.3,

Pedestal is a compression member whose effective length does not exceed 3 times the least lateral dimensions.

Note:-

The followings are some other codal recommendations for reinforced columns are –

1. The cross-sectional area of longitudinal reinforcement shall not be less than 0.8% nor more than 6% of gross cross-sectional area of the column.

2. The minimum number of longitudinal bars provided in a column shall be four in rectangular columns and six in circular columns.

3. The diameter of bars shall not be less than 12mm.

4. In case of pedestals, the longitudinal reinforcement is not taken in account in strength calculations and nominal longitudinal reinforcement not less than 0.15% of the cross-sectional area shall be provided.
