Explanation

Bands are provided in the walls to tie them together and to impart horizontal bending strength in them.

Based on the location, Bands are classified into three categories 

  • Lintel band – provided at lintel levels.
  • Roof band – provided immediately below the roof or floor.
  • Gable band – provided at the top of gable masonry below the purlins.

As per IS4326:1993, cl. 8.4.5, Table 6,

The vertical thickness (i.e. depth) of RC band be kept 75 mm, while width of RC band is assumed same as the thickness of the wall which should not be less than 200 mm.
