  • Rowlatt Act: It was termed as the Black Act by the Nationalists.
    • Looking into militant nationalist activities was its primary aim. On the basis of suspicion, any person could be arrested.
  • Against such arrest, no appeal or petition could be filed for a maximum period of two years.
  • In February 1919, a nationwide protest was called by Gandhiji.
  • After the failure of the protest, Gandhi organised a Satyagraha Sabha in which younger members of Home Rule League movement.

  • Charter act 1813: This Act renewed the Company's Charter for a further 20 years.
    • It deprived the company of its monopoly of trade with India, and thus drew a clear line of distinction between the Crown and the Company.
    • It subjected the three Councils of the Governors to greater control of Parliament.
    • Granted 11000 for the purpose of education.
    • The Christian Missionaries were allowed to spread their religion in India.
  • Charter act 1833: It made the Governor-General of Bengal as the Governor-General of India and his council as the Indian Council.
    • First Governor-General of India was Lord William Bentick.
    • Governor-General's Council were separated into executive and legislative functions.
  • Charter act 1853: It provided for a new Legislative Council of Governor-General comprising of 6 new members called Legislative Councillors.
    • This council came to be known as Indian Legislative Council.
    • A separate Governor for Bengal was to be appointed.
  • Pitt's India Act,1784: Introduced to remove the drawbacks of the Regulating Act.
    • Named after British Prime Minister William Pitt.
    • The Act placed Indian affairs under the direct control of the British Government.
    • The act clearly distinguished the commercial and political function of the company.
    • The company's territories in India were called the British Possessions in India for the first time, by this act.
  • Morley Minto Act: Commonly known as Indian Councils Act 1909
    • The number of members of the Legislative Council at the centre was increased from 16 to 60.
    • The right of separate electorate was given to the Muslims.
