Given:

Difference in distance traveled = 55 km

Formula used:

Speed = distance/time

Calculation:

Let the buses meet after 't' hours

47t - 42t = 55

⇒ 5t = 55

⇒ t = 11

Total distance = (47 + 42) × 11 = 979 km

∴ The distance is 979 km
