  • This disease is also known as splenic fever due to the fact that there is extensive enlargement of the spleen (splenomegaly) due to this infection.
  • The disease is caused by bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis.

 

  • Symptoms:
  1. There is elevation of body temperature (104 to 108°C).
  2. Animal refuses to eat and there is development of bloat.
  3. Animal is extremely depressed and shows distressed breathing.
  4. Extreme dyspnoea leads to mouth breathing due to oxygen hunger.
  5. Sudden death within 48 hrs of illness of animal.

 

  • Preventive measures:
  1. Age of first vaccine in anthrax is after 4 months and above and annually in endemic areas.
  2. Strict quarantine measures in anthrax prone areas.
  3. Preventing the introduction of infected animals into disease free areas.
  4. Carcasses should not be opened as it may contaminate the pasture.
  5. The adjacent areas of the dead and infected animals should be thoroughly disinfected by 3% per acetic acid or 10% caustic soda or 10% formaline.
