The correct answer is 22.

  • The 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution gives the list of official languages of India.

  • When these languages were added to the constitution it meant that they will be represented on the Official Languages Commission.
  • Now as the languages are added it is the responsibility of the government so that these languages grow rapidly and become an effective means of communication.
  • It includes 22 languages among which English has not been added to it.
  • These languages are adopted as official languages by most of the states.
  • Initially, there were 14 languages included, later on, other languages were added.

  • The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution consists of the official 22 languages:
    • (1) Assamese
    • (2) Bengali
    • (3) Gujarati
    • (4) Hindi
    • (5) Kannada
    • (6) Kashmiri

  • 21st Amendment Act of 1967 added the Sindhi language.
  • 71st Amendment Act of 1992 added Konkani, Manipuri, and Nepali.
  • 92nd Amendment Act of 2003 added Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali.
