Pore pressure:

It is the pressure exerted by the pore water filled in the void of the soil skeleton. It is denoted by u and equal to the depth below the ground water table up to the point where it is measured and multiplied by the unit weight of water.

Pore pressure is also called the neutral stress because it acts on all side of particle, hence does not cause the soil particles to press against adjacent particles.
