Correct Answer - Option 4 : Either constant voltage operation or unity p.f. operation

Reactive compensation can be done by either series compensation or shunt compensation.

Series compensation:

  • It is the method of improving the system voltage by connecting a capacitor or reactor in series with the transmission line.
  • In series compensation, reactive power is inserted in series with the transmission line for improving the impedance of the system.
  • The following are the advantages of series capacitive compensation.
    • Increase in power transfer capability
    • Improvement in system stability
    • Load division among parallel line
    • Control of voltage

Shunt compensation:

  • Whenever an inductive load is connected to the transmission line, power factor lags because of lagging load current.
  • To compensate this, a shunt capacitor is connected which draws current leading the source voltage, thereby the power factor can be improved.
  • Whenever an capacitive load is connected to the transmission line, power factor leads because of leading load current.
  • To compensate this, a shunt reactor is connected which draws current lagging the source voltage, thereby the power factor can be improved.

Conclusion:

  • When reactive compensation is used in series it improves the voltage of the systems.
  • When reactive compensation is used in shunt it improves the power factor of the system.
  • So, based on the type of the compensation, it  maintain either constant voltage or unity power factor but not both at a time.,
