Given:

a4 – b4 = 36, a2 – b2 = 9

Concept:

a4 – b4 = (a2 + b2) × (a2 – b2)

Calculation:

⇒ a2 + b2 = (a4 - b4)/(a2 – b2)

⇒ a2 + b2 = 36/9 = 4

∴ The required result will be 4.
