Correct Answer - Option 3 : involving them in discussions on moral issues

Together with the development of cognition and social skills, children develop along the dimension of moral values and reasoning. They learn the rules for right and wrong and understand other laws and rules. Lawrence Kohlberg studied moral development by posing moral dilemmas to groups of children as well as adolescents and adults.

ROLE OF TEACHER IN FACILITATING MORAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN:

  • The teacher or the school has a major role in facilitating the moral development of children once they are enrolled in the school.
  • Schools should have an activity-oriented program for the moral development of children.
  • The school plays a very important role in the moral development of the students. Through the organization of various curricular and co-curricular activities, the teacher can foster among students various moral qualities.
  • In the teaching of different subjects like languages and social studies, etc., the teacher may stress moral qualities like love, sacrifice, self-control, truthfulness, uprightness, etc.
  • A list of some suggested activities for the moral development of students is given below:
  1. Organizing group projects, camps, social service programs, and games
  2. Organizing school panchayats
  3. involving students in discussions on moral issues
  4. Addressing daily morning school assembly
  5. Celebrating festivals including national days
  6. Showing appropriate films, stage dramas, and plays
  7. Highlighting the teachings of saints and seers
  8. Encouraging them to clean the school campus, playgrounds, public places, etc.
  9. Looking after the school garden
  10. Organizing girl guide and boy scout groups
  11. Celebrating festivals of different communities religions
  12. Organizing educational excursions and trips
  13. Domesticating and rearing animal pets
  14. Visiting backwards and slum areas and rendering some sort of service to the people living in such areas
  15. Arranging community and school get-togethers
  16. Organizing a comprehensive program of guidance and counselling for bringing about moral changes

From the above, we can say that a teacher can instil moral values in children by involving students in discussions on moral issues (Kohlberg).
