If y = 2ab/(a + b), find the value of expression, [{(y + a)/(y - a)} + {(y + b)/(y - b)}].

Correct Answer - Option 2 : 2

Given:

y = 2ab/(a + b)

Concepts used:

Using componendo and dividendo,

If p/q = c/d

⇒ (p + q)/(p - q) = (c + d)/(c - d)

Calculation:

y = 2ab/(a + b)

⇒ y/a = 2b/(a + b)

Applying componendo and dividendo rule,

⇒ {(y + a)/(y – a)} = {2b + (a + b)}/{2b - (a + b)}

⇒ {(y + a)/(y – a)} = (3b + a)/(b - a)      ---- (1)

y = 2ab/(a + b)

⇒ y/b = 2a/(a + b)

⇒ {(y + b)/(y – b)} = {2a + (a + b)}/{2a - (a + b)}

⇒ {(y + b)/(y – b)} = (3a + b)/(a - b)       ---- (2)

Adding (1) and (2),

⇒ {(y + a)/(y - a)} + {(y + b)/(y - b)} = (3b + a)/(b - a) + (3a + b)/(a - b)

⇒ [{(y + a)/(y - a)} + {(y + b)/(y - b)}] = 2    

∴ Value of expression, [{(y + a)/(y - a)} + {(y + b)/(y - b)}] is 2.
