Correct Answer - Option 3 : Local temperature variation

The correct answer is Local temperature variation.

  • Tropical cyclones are like giant engines that use warm, moist air as fuel.
    • That is why they form only over warm ocean waters near the equator.
  • The warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from near the surface, because this air moves up and away from the surface, there is less air left near the surface.
  • Conditions:
    1. Large sea surface with a temperature higher than 27° C.
    2. Presence of the Coriolis force enough to create a cyclonic vortex.
    3. Small variations in the vertical wind speed.
    4. A pre-existing weak low-pressure area or low-level cyclonic circulation.
    5. Upper divergence above the sea level system.

  • Cyclone of Bay of Bengal:
    • The Bay of Bengal, located northeast of the Indian Ocean, is responsible for the formation of some of the strongest and deadliest tropical cyclones in the world.
    • The deadliest cyclone in the bay was the 1970 Bhola Cyclone and the costliest was Cyclone Amphan.
  • Western disturbance:
    • A western disturbance is an extratropical storm originating in the Mediterranean region that brings sudden winter rain to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent.
    • It is a non-monsoonal precipitation pattern driven by the westerlies.
    • western disturbances damage the crops in the North Indian states like Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
  • Northeastern winds:
    • A part of North-East trade winds blows over the Bay of Bengal.
    • They gather moisture which causes rainfall in the Coromandel coast while the rest of the country remains dry.
    • These winds are planetary winds known as Northeast Trades.
    • In India, they are essentially land-bearing winds.
