Ratio of chemical A and B in boiler Y is 3 : 2 and Boiler X has ratio of chemical A to chemical B as 1 : 7, 16 litres of mixture is removed transferred from boiler X to boiler Y. What is the total capacity of boiler Y if capacity of boiler X is 144 litres and difference between chemical A and B in boiler Y after transfer is 25 litres? Assume that after transferring 16 litres from boiler X, boiler Y is running at full capacity

Best answer
Correct Answer - Option 4 : 201 litres

Given:

Boiler Y → Chemical A:  Chemical B = 3: 2

Boiler X → Chemical A: Chemical B = 1: 7

Boiler X = 144 litres

Chemical A = Chemical B = 25 litres (New mixture)

Calculation:

Boiler X = 144 litres

Chemical A in boiler X = (1/ 8) × 144

⇒ Chemical A in boiler X = 18 litres

Chemical B in boiler X = (7/ 8) × 144

⇒ Chemical B in boiler X = 126 litres

Let chemical A in boiler Y be 3P and chemical B in boiler Y be 2P

Chemical A quantity transferred = 16 × 1/ 8

⇒ Chemical A quantity transferred = 2 litres

Chemical B quantity transferred = 14 litres (∵ 16 – 2 = 14)

⇒ Total chemical A in boiler Y = 2 + 3P

⇒ Total chemical B in boiler Y = 14 + 2P

Now, (2 + 3P) – (14 + 2P) = 25

⇒ P = 25 + 14 – 2

⇒ P = 37 litres

Total quantity of mixture in boiler Y = 5 × P

⇒ Total quantity of mixture in boiler Y = 185 litres

∴ Total quantity of mixture in boiler Y is 185 litres  (initial Quantity.)

185 is initial quantity of mixture in boiler Y

final quantity of mixture in boiler Y is 185+16 = 201 litres
