Treaty of Surat
  • On 6 March 1775, the Treaty of Surat was signed between Raghunathrao and the British East India Company at Bombay.
  • Raghunathrao was a claimant to the throne of the Peshwa.
  • As per this treaty, Raghunath Rao ceded the territories of Salsette and Bassein to the British, so that the British restore him to Poona.
  • But this treaty created confusion. Raghunath Rao made another treaty but that treaty was not accepted by Nana Phadnavis and he granted a port to the French. The British retaliated by sending troops to Poona. This triggered the First Anglo Maratha War.
Treaty of Purandar
  • On 1 March 1776, the Treaty of Purandar was signed between Nana Phadnavis, a Maratha minister, and the Calcutta Council of the East India Company.
  • As per this treaty, Raghunathrao was only given a pension and was not promised any support for his claim to the Peshwa seat. But the British did retain Baruch and Salsette.
Convention of Wadgaon
  • Convention of Wadgaon, (Jan. 13, 1779), compact concluded after the First Maratha War in India (1775–82), marking the end of British efforts to intervene in Maratha affairs by making Raghunath Rao Peshwa (the nominal leader of the Maratha confederacy).
Treaty of Salbai
  • The Treaty of Salbai, which ended the First Anglo-Maratha War, was signed on 17 May 1782 between the British East India Company and the Marathas.
