Read the extract and answer the question that follows -

We use different materials and services in our daily life. Some of these are available in our immediate surroundings, while other requirements are met by bringing things from other places. Goods and services do not move from supply locales to demand locales on their own. The movement of these goods and services from their supply locations to demand locations  necessitates the need for transport. Some people are engaged in facilitating these movements. These are known to be traders who make the products come to the consumers by  transportation. Thus, the pace of development of a country depends upon the production of goods and services as well as their movement over space. Therefore, efficient means of transport are pre-requisites for fast development. Movement of these goods and services can be over three important domains of our earth i.e. land, water and air. Based on these, transport can also be classified into land, water and air transport. For a long time, trade and transport were restricted to limited space. With the development of science and technology, the area of influence of trade and transport expanded far and wide. Today, the world has been converted into a large village with the help of efficient and fastmoving transport. Transport has been able to achieve this with the help of an equally developed communication system. Therefore, transport, communication and trade are complementary to each other. Questions:

1. Explain the necessity of means of transport in modern times.

 2. Enumerate the domains and means of transport.

 3. Why are efficient means of transport pre-requisites for the fast development of the country?

1. The necessity of means of transport in modern times is primarily driven by the need to meet the requirements of daily life. People rely on various materials and services that may not be readily available in their immediate surroundings. Therefore, the movement of goods and services from their supply locations to demand locations is essential, and this is where transport plays a crucial role. Without efficient means of transport, it would be challenging to bring goods and services from different places to consumers. Transport ensures that products can be transported quickly and effectively to meet the demands of a growing population.

2. Transport can be classified into three important domains based on the movement of goods and services: land, water, and air.

- Land transport: This includes various means such as roads, railways, and pipelines. Road transport, involving vehicles like cars, trucks, and buses, is widely used for short to medium-distance transportation. Railways are suitable for moving heavy goods and passengers over longer distances. Pipelines are used to transport liquids and gases, primarily for industrial purposes.

- Water transport: This domain encompasses transportation through water bodies like rivers, canals, and oceans. It includes ships, barges, boats, and other vessels. Water transport is especially important for international trade, bulk cargo transportation, and connecting regions with waterways.

- Air transport: This form of transport involves the movement of goods and passengers through the air using aircraft such as airplanes and helicopters. Air transport is known for its speed and ability to cover long distances quickly, making it crucial for international travel and transporting time-sensitive goods.

3. Efficient means of transport are prerequisites for the fast development of a country for several reasons:

a) Access to resources: Efficient transport systems allow for the movement of goods and services from areas of production to areas of demand. This ensures that essential resources, raw materials, and finished products reach their intended destinations promptly. Without efficient transport, regions lacking specific resources would struggle to obtain them, hindering economic development.

b) Trade facilitation: Transportation plays a vital role in facilitating trade, both domestically and internationally. It enables the exchange of goods and services between regions and countries, promoting economic growth and specialization. Efficient transport systems reduce trade barriers, encourage competition, and open up new markets, leading to increased commerce and development.

c) Connectivity and mobility: An efficient transport network enhances connectivity and mobility within a country. It enables people to travel easily for work, education, healthcare, and recreation, fostering social and economic interactions. Good connectivity promotes regional integration, attracts investment, and encourages the establishment of industries, which further drives economic development.

d) Industrial development: Efficient transport systems support industrial development by ensuring the timely delivery of raw materials to manufacturing facilities and the distribution of finished products to consumers. Industries rely on reliable and cost-effective transportation to operate efficiently, expand their markets, and remain competitive both domestically and internationally.
