Correct Answer - Option 2 : The first general election after independence was held in 1950.

Democracy is a form of government where power is held by the people.

  • A democracy is a rule by the people.
  • During British rule, few upper-class people were allowed to vote. Thus, a small section of the Indian population could vote even before the independence of India.
  • In representative democracies people do not participate directly but, instead, choose their representatives through an election process.
    • In a representative democracy, people rule themselves.
    • Between December 1946 and November 1949, some three hundred Indians had a series of meetings on the country’s political future.
    • These discussions resulted in the framing of the Indian Constitution, which was adopted on 26 January 1950.
    • One feature of the Constitution was its adoption of a universal adult franchise.
    • All Indians above the age of 21 years would be allowed to vote in state and national elections.
    • So, we can say that India adopted representative democracy after independence.
  • Therefore, we can say that the statements mentioned in the 1,3 and 4 are true in the context of democracy in India.

  • The Indian general election of 1951–52, held from 25 October 1951 to 21 February 1952, was the first election in the Lok Sabha.

Thus, the statement that 'The first general election after independence was held in 1950.' is false in the context of democracy in India.
