A thermometer is marked wrongly. At 0°C it reads -15°C  and at 100°C it reads 90°C. Then the reading at 50°C will be:
1. 37.5°C
2. 40°C

Best answer
Correct Answer - Option 1 : 37.5°C

CONCEPT:

Measurement of temperature:

  • The instrument used for the measurement of temperature is called a thermometer.
  • All thermometers are based on the fact that matter expands on heating.

CALCULATION:

At 0°C the thermometer reading is -15°C.

At 100°C the thermometer reading is 90°C.

  • We know that for the thermometer,

\(⇒ \frac{90-\left ( -15 \right )}{100-0}=\frac{T-\left ( -15 \right )}{50-0}\)

\(⇒ \frac{90+15}{100}=\frac{T+15}{50}\)

⇒ T = 37.5°C

Hence, option 1 is correct.
