Which among the four maps of different size of the same area drawn with different scales as mentioned below is the largest in size?
1. Map A (scale 1 cm equal 1 cm)
2. Map B (R. F. - 1 : 2, 00,000)
3. Map C (scale - 1 cm equals 1.5 km)

Best answer
Correct Answer - Option 4 : Map D (R. F. - 1 : 2,50,000)

representative fraction (RF) is the ratio of a distance on the map to a distance on the ground. Example-  An RF of 1:24,000 means one inch on the map equals 24,000 inches on the ground and one centimeter on the map equals 24,000 centimeters on the ground.

1 km = 1000 m and 1m = 100 cm

We will convert all the right side values into km.

Map A (scale 1 cm equal 1 cm): 1cm on the map equals 1/1,00,000 km on the ground.
  • 1 cm = 1/1X1000X100 = 0.00001 km (on the ground).
  • 1: 0.00001 or 1 cm equals 0.00001 km.

Map B (R. F. - 1 : 2, 00,000): 1cm (map) = 2,00,000 cm (ground) or 2km(ground)
  • 2 km = 2X1000X100 = 2,00,000cm (on the ground).
  • 1: 2,00,000 or 1 cm equals 2 km.

Map C (scale - 1 cm equals 1.5 km): 1 cm on a map equals 1.5 km on the ground.
  •   so, 1.5 km = 1.5X1000X100 cm = 1,50,000cm (on the ground).
  •   1 : 1,50,000 or 1 cm equals 1.5 km.

Map D (R.F. - 1 : 2, 50,000): 1 cm (map) = 2,50,000 cm (ground) or 2.5km (ground)
  • So, 2.5 km = 2.5X1000 = 2500, 2500X100 = 2,50,000 cm (on the ground).
  • 1: 2,50,000 or 1 cm equals 2.5 km.

Hence, the correct answer is Map D (R.F. - 1: 2, 50,000)
