Correct Answer - Option 3 : Mirzapur

Standard TimeStandard time is the synchronization of clocks within a geographical region to a single time standard, rather than a local mean time standard. Time standards were often based on the Earth's rotational period. Various types of second and day are used as the basic time interval for most time scales. Other intervals of time (minutes, hours, and years) are usually defined in terms of these two.

  • The longitude passing through Royal Observatory Greenwich meridian is used as the standard time all over the world. Greenwich Mean Time in London is used as the standard time for all over the world as it has the standard meridian passing over it at 0°.
  • India Standard Time (IST) is 5:30 hours ahead of Coordinated universal time (UTC). This time zone is in use during Standard time in Asia. India Standard Time is a half-hour time zone. Its local time differs by 30 minutes instead of the normal whole hour.
  • This time zone is often called India time.
  • India lies in the east of the Prime Meridian, between 68°7' E and 97°25'E
  • The 82°30'  East longitude is taken as the Standard Time Meridian of India, as it passes through the middle of India (Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh).

Hence, the correct answer is Mirzapur.

  • The local time of places differs from one place to another. In India, we find a difference of about 1 hour and 45 minutes in the local times of Dwarka in Gujarat and Dibrugarh in Assam.
  • Hence, it is necessary to adopt the local time of some central meridian of a country as the standard time for the country.
  • The longitude of 82½° E (82° 30’E) is considered the standard meridian.
  • The local time stated or mentioned at this meridian is considered as the standard time for the whole country. This is called the Indian Standard Time (IST).
