IRON ORE
  • Iron ore is the basic mineral and the backbone of industrial development.
  • India is endowed with fairly abundant resources of iron ore. India is rich in good quality iron ores
  • The major iron ore belts in India are: Odisha-Jharkhand belt: In Odisha high grade hematite ore is found in Badampahar mines in the Mayurbhanj and Kendujhar districts. In the adjoining Singbhum district of Jharkhand haematite iron ore is mined in Gua and Noamundi.
  • In Karnataka, iron ore deposits occur in Sandur-Hospet area of Ballari district, Baba Budan hills and Kudremukh in Chikkamagaluru district and parts of Shivamogga, Chitradurg and Tumakuru districts. 
DIAMOND
  • India was the only source of diamonds in the world for over 3000 years till diamond deposits were located in Brazil and South Africa.
  • Today, NMDC is the only organised producer of diamond in India from its Majhgawan mine at Panna, Madhya Pradesh and continues to carry on the legend and past glory through its untiring efforts.
COAL 
  • This is the most abundantly found fossil fuel. It is used
    as a domestic fuel, in industries such as iron and steel,
    steam engines and to generate electricity. Electricity
    from coal is called thermal power.
  • The leading coal producers of the world are China, USA, Germany, Russia, South Africa and France.
  • The coal producing areas of India are Raniganj, Jharia, Dhanbad and Bokaro in Jharkhand.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
  • Heat energy obtained from the earth is called geothermal energy.
  • The temperature in the interior of the earth rises steadily as we go deeper. Some times this heat energy may surface itself in the form of hot springs. This heat energy can be used to generate power.
  • USA has the world’s largest geothermal power plants followed by New Zealand, Iceland, Philippines and Central America.
  • In India, geothermal plants are located in Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh and Puga Valley in Ladakh.
