  • The Government of India adopted the National Drinking Water Mission (later Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission) in the year 1979.
  • Under this, the government aims to provide 40 liters of safe drinking water in rural areas.
  • In February 2006, the government created the National Rural Drinking Water Quality Testing and Maintenance Program under which, with the help of local panchayats and village sanitation committees, an effort has been made to bring the program under social participation.
    • After testing in the level laboratories, necessary steps are taken to remove the effluents.
