  • Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India's most elevated military enrichment. 
  • He was authorized into the eighth Battalion, the nineteenth Hyderabad Regiment, in 1942. 
  • He served in Burma during the Arakan Campaign of World War II, for which he was referenced in despatches. 
  • Battling in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948, Somnath Sharma was martyred on 3 November 1947 while shocking Pakistani infiltrators close to Srinagar Airport. 
  • For his chivalry and penance in this skirmish of Badgam, he was after death granted the Param Vir Chakra.
