Correct Answer - Option 2 : 400

Given:

A candidate scores 30% of maximum marks and fails by 8 marks

And another candidate who scores 35% marks gets 12 marks more than the minimum pass marks

Formula used:

Passing marks = percentage of maximum marks + fails by marks

Passing marks = percentage of maximum marks - more marks than passing.

Calculation:

Let maximum marks be x.

Passing marks = 30% of x + 8      ----(i)

Passing marks = 35% of x - 12      ----(ii)

From equation (i) and equation (ii), we get

30% of x + 8 = 35% of x - 12

⇒ 35% of x - 30% of x = 12 + 8

⇒ 5% of x = 20

⇒ 5x/100 = 20

⇒ x = (20 × 100)/5

⇒ x = 400

∴ The maximum marks is 400.
