Correct Answer - Option 4 : Tensile Strain

The ratio of change in length to its original length of material is called normal strain. It is two types: tensile strain and compressive strain.

Due to application of direct tensile load on material, there is increase in length of member. Consequently, the ratio of extension in length to its original length is called tensile strain.

Due to application of direct compressive load on material, there is decrease in length of member. Consequently, the ratio of contraction in length to its original length is called compressive strain.

The stresses developed in material due to application of tensile load are called tensile stresses and due to application of compressive load is called compressive stresses.

Note:

The strain developed in material which causes distortion in material or change its shape is called shear strain. The stress responsible for this called shear stress.
