  • The word ‘Secular’ got inserted in the Preamble of the Constitution of India through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1976.
  • The term “Secular” means being "separate" from religion or having no religious basis.
  • Secularism means separation of religion from political, economic, social and cultural aspects of life, religion is treated as a purely personal matter.
  • Indian Secularism is also reflected in its fundamental rights (Article 25-28) where it guarantees each of its citizens the right to practice any religion.

  •  Important Points of the 42nd Constitutional Amendment of 1976:
    • Added three new words (i.e., socialist, secular and integrity) in the Preamble.
    • Added Fundamental Duties by the citizens (new Part IV A).
    • Added three new Directive Principles viz., equal justice and free legal aid, the participation of workers in the management of industries and protection of the environment, forests, and wildlife.
    • Extended the one-time duration of the President’s rule in a state from 6 months to one year.
    • Shifted five subjects from the state list to the concurrent list.
