  • Pradip Kumar Banerjee was a professional Indian footballer who played for the India national football team as a striker.
  • He also captained the national team and became the national team's coach later on. In 45 official matches, he represented India and scored the country's 15 official goals.
  • When the awards were organized in 1961, he was one of the first winners of the Arjuna Award.
  • In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri and was named by IFFHS as the 20th Century Indian Footballer. He won the FIFA Order of Merit in 2004, the highest honour granted by FIFA.

 

  • He represented India in three Asian Games, namely the Tokyo Asian Games of 1958, the Jakarta Asian Games of 1962, where India won the football gold medal, and then the Bangkok Asian Games of 1966.
  • He was part of the national team that played in Melbourne at the 1956 Summer Olympics, where they made it to the Semi-Finals.
