Correct Answer - Option 1 : gravity

Explanation:

  • The application of water to the surface of the field by GRAVITY flow is known as SURFACE IRRIGATION.
  • The water is fed into narrow channels (furrows) or strips of land, or the whole field is flooded (basin irrigation).
  • Water flows over and around the ground in surface irrigation systems through gravity movement to wet it and penetrate into the soil.
  • Furrow, boundary line, and basin irrigation are three types of surface irrigation.
  • NO PUMPS are used in surface irrigation. All the work is done by gravity
  • Flood irrigation is a term used to describe surface irrigation, which implies that the water distribution is unregulated but is cost-effective.

As in surface irrigation, no pumps are used, only gravity is the sole bearer for irrigating the land, the correct answer is - GRAVITY

WHAT IS IRRIGATION?

  • Irrigation is the method of artificially adding water to crops in order to meet their water requirements.
  • Irrigation may also be used to provide nutrients to crops.
  • It adds regulated quantities of water to land in order to aid in crop production.
  • Irrigation aids in the growth of agricultural crops, the preservation of landscapes, and the re-vegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during times of below-average rainfall.
  • Irrigation also serves other purposes in crop production, such as frost control, weed suppression in grain fields, and soil consolidation prevention.
  • In countries like India, most farmers depend on the rains for irrigating the land.
  • TYPES OF IRRIGATION -
  1. SURFACE IRRIGATION - through the work done by gravity.
  2. DRIP IRRIGATION - delivering drops of water near the roots of the plants.
  3. SUB IRRIGATION - distribution of water through a system of pumping stations, canals, and ditches.
  4. MANUAL IRRIGATION - through watering cans
  5. SPRINKLER IRRIGATION - delivering water through sprinklers
