Correct Answer - Option 4 : 36 & 77

Given

Mean = 42

Median = 35

Formula Used

Median = (n/2) + (n+ 1)/2th term  (n = no. of observation )

Mean = sum of observation/no. of observation

Calculation

Observations are 17, 22, 26, 29, 34, x, 42, 67, 70, y

Median = 5th + 6th

⇒ x + 34 = 70

⇒ x = 36

Mean = (17 + 22 + 26 + 29 + 34 + 36 + 42 + 67 + 70 + y)/10

⇒ 420 = (17 + 22 + 26 + 29 + 34 + 36 + 42 + 67 + 70 + y)

⇒ y = 77

∴ The required answer is 36 and 77
