Bhakti is a personal devotion to God.

  • Bhakti, which comes to mean “devotion” or “love” in later literature, is one of the central concepts of Hinduism.
  • Bhakti saints, Alvars, and Nayanmars started a movement of religious reform called the Bhakti Movement in South India.
  • The Nayanmars and Alvars worshipped Shiva and Vishnu respectively and spread the idea of love, devotion, and service.
  • Shankaracharya travelled all over India and spread the importance of knowledge as a means to achieve God.
  • Ramanuja, Madhvacharya, Kabir, Tulsidas, Meerabai, Surdas were the prominent Bhakti preachers.
  • The Bhakti preachers believed in the oneness of God and believed in total surrender of self to God.
