Correct Answer - Option 1 : AC slip ring motor
  • Crane travel needs high starting torque for their operation.
  • The Slip-ring Induction motors in comparison to Squirrel cage motors have low starting current and high starting torque.
  • These motors are used for most industrial drives of high power and requiring high starting torques.
  • In the Slip-ring induction motor, the starting torque is directly proportional to rotor resistance.
  • Therefore, by increasing the rotor resistance, high starting torques can be obtained.

The motor normally used for crane travel is AC slip-ring motor.

Applications Of DC shunt motor:

  • Industrial Use
  • Lathes
  • Drills
  • Boring Mills
  • Shapers
  • Spinning and Weaving Machines

Applications Of Synchronous motor:

  • Used for large power, low head pumps
  • Reciprocating pumps
  • Steel mills, Rolling mills
  • Compressors
  • Induced drought fans
  • Crushers and Blowers
  • Synchronous condensers

Applications Of DC differentially compounded motor:

  • Because of their poor torque characteristics, differentially compound motors are rarely used
  • This is the only motor that may have zero speed regulation
